NEBRASKA SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION
COMMITTTEE ON
SPEECH AND PLAY PRODUCTION
Minutes of June 5, 2009 Meeting
The Committee on Speech and Play Production met on Friday, June 5, 2009, at 8:00 a.m. at the NSAA Office. Debra Velder, Associate Director of the NSAA, chaired the meeting. The mission of the committee was to develop the 2009-10 Speech and Play Production judge’s exam, review the Judge’s Manual, moving forward with a rubric for speech and play production; and discuss logistics of the State Speech Championships.
Committee members present were Patsy Koch-Johns, Lincoln High School; Matt Davis, Lincoln East High School; Matt Heimes, Lincoln Southwest High School; Denice Kovanda, Fillmore Central High School; Blaine Christen, Gretna High School; A.J. Johnson, Hartington High School; Kyle Vincent, Cozad High School; Bill Gilbreath, Axtell High School; and Courtney Lee, Bayard High School. Ex-officio members included NSAA staff members Debra Velder and Cindy Callaway.
The committee formulated questions for the 2009-10 Speech
and Play Production judge’s exam and offered input to include rubrics to the
Speech and Play Production Judge’s Manual.
The committee agreed that an Approved Ruling was needed to clarify Bylaw
6.6.3 which passed that now allows a school to enter two entries in Duet Acting
and Oral Interpretation of Drama at the district speech contest. The committee supports an Approved Ruling
which would state, “A student may enter
and participate in two different
events.” The Approved Ruling will be
placed on the August Board of Control Agenda for action. The committee also agreed that the following
clarification be placed in the Oral Interpretation of Poetry rules to better
understand ‘interpreted from manuscript’:
“The selection(s) must be
interpreted from a manuscript. The
contestant may interpret the selection by referencing the manuscript or may
give the selection solely by memory without reference to the manuscript. No costumes or props, with the exception of
the intact manuscript, shall be permitted.”
With no further business, the committee adjourned at 3:30 p.m.
