Summary: | The division of sports seasons shall be as follows: No school shall register more than one varsity team per sport. STUDENTS MAY PARTICIPATE IN A TEAM SPORT AND AN INDIVIDUAL SPORT OR TWO INDIVIDUAL SPORTS IN THE SAME SEASON (INDIVIDUAL & TEAM SPORTS NOTED BELOW). THE DECISION TO ALLOW STUDENTS TO PARTICIPATE IN TWO SPORTS IN THE SAME SEASON WOULD BE DETERMINED BY SCHOOL ADMINISTRATION WITH CONSIDERATION TO THE SCHOOL'S ABILITY TO PROVIDE BOTH OPPORTUNITIES. DEFINITION OF INDIVIDUAL OR TEAM SPORT-A SPORT IS CONSIDERED AN INDIVIDUAL SPORT IF A SINGLE PERSON CAN COMPETE IN THE SPORT AND STILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR THE POSTSEASON. A SPORT IS CONSIDERED A TEAM SPORT IF THE SCHOOL IS REQUIRED TO HAVE A MINIMUM NUMBER OF PLAYERS TO COMPETE. INDIVIDUAL: B/G GOLF B/G TENNIS B/G CROSS COUNTRY UNIFIED BOWLING B/G WRESTLING B/G SWIMMING B/G BOWLING B/G TRACK & FIELD UNIFIED TRACK & FIELD TEAM: SOFTBALL FOOTBALL VOLLEYBALL B/G BASKETBALL BASEBALL B/G SOCCER
Rationale: | In smaller schools, numbers are dwindling for participation in NSAA sports. This would allow schools to help keep numbers up and be able to participate. It gives more opportunities for students to compete and participate. Since it is up to the school, they can determine if they have the resources to provide this opportunity or if they need time to get things put in place to be able to have things work smoothly
Pros: | More opportunities for student-athletes Higher competition level Not required by all schools to do this
Cons: | Creativity in scheduling practices and competitions |
