Summary:We are proposing that athletes have the opportunity to dual sport during every sports season. This means they can participate in more than one sport and be eligible for post-season. Each school will decide on how this is handled at the local level.
Rationale:There are many athletes that excel in multiple sports and this gives them the opportunity to participate in more than one. It is providing more opportunities for our student athletes. It is also often times the difference of having enough kids to play and practice at all levels for small schools. For example we have a lot of great cross country runners in the state that would love to play football, but are not allowed. This would allow for them to participate in both giving some of the small schools more athletes to be able to fill JV and Varsity schedules. We are already doing this with activities where students can participate in more than one at a time. It could help decrease the number of lower level games being canceled on a daily basis across the state in smaller schools.
Pros:The athlete gets more opportunity to participate in athletic programs should they decide to, there will be more student athletes available to participate in the sport, students will feel less pressure to have to choose if they enjoy doing both sports. It could help decrease the number of lower level games being cancelled in all sports.
Cons:Schools have to figure out how to handle this at a local level for prioritizing conflicting events, students will get less practice time in each sport, and will miss more instructional time.
